Corrections to Darron's "Firsts- Standing Room Only"

I have two corrections to this article:

1. Jackson 5 who????? ...It's the Santa 5 now!
Darron, you are not wearing pajamas- you are wearing a santa costume. Mom made these
for the following kids: Monica, Tony, Loni, Darron, and Kurt. We wore these in a ward Christmas program. You're right, the boy's tops did not have buttons or clasps. They wrapped around
you and then were held together by a big black belt. I remember spending evenings practicing
singing the song and dance. If I remember correctly, and I may not- but I'm sure Loni will correct me if I'm wrong, we sang "Up On the Housetops." Mom taught us a dance that involved doing these motions in the following order: Jump up with hands over head, jump to your belly, do a push up, and then return to our feet. This was repeated several times during the chorus. I can't remember anything after the push-up... probably because I was so out of breath by then... We were a huge hit at the show. It was all an attempt by mom to turn us into the Mormon version of the Jackson 5! (Dad wasn't the only one dreaming of hitting it big one day!)

2. The True Creator
I am the unequivocal creator of Goblins and Goodguys... the best game on Earth! Although I have no witness to my setting the game up for the first time as Darron and Loni claim, I, as the eldest, always did everything first and best... and lead the family in all cool things- so it stands to reason that I was the creator of this game. However, please let me set the record straight. Having fun with the debate over who created the game is not equivalent to being sensitive to its origination. For the sake of family peace, let me just say that I don't really care who invented
it, I just want it to live on. One of my bucketlist items is to play it again with my brothers and sisters and have my kids there as well. Anyone interested? We need a house with access
to the backyard from both sides!

  1. Totally need to know your ages! Darron looked at this and said, "I have no memory of this and I must have been six". Umm...no, you aren't six!

  2. These were taken in December of 1971 according to the back of the picture. That would make me 7, Tony 6, Loni 5, Darron 4, and Kurt 3. Isn't this the cutest thing ever?

  3. Darron would have been 3 and Kurt would have just barely turned 2.

  4. What a great memory! I remember those costumes and the annual Christmas performances. Our songs and routines were always for the ward talent shows and Christmas shows and often for our Smith Family Christmas Caroling trek to every neighbor and ward member we could squeeze into one night, often accompanied by a gift of Mom's infamous fruit cake. Really, Mom? You know they just chucked it. Right? No one eats that stuff. I remember all those motions Monica described. And I remember one time Tony kicked me in the right arm muscle when we kicked our feet out for the push-up segment. It hurt so bad and I cried like a baby. She taught us different Christmas songs every year. I do remember doing 'Up On The Housetops' as well as 'I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause' and my least favorite Christmas song of all times, 'Have a Holly Jolly Christmas." Yup. Mom had huge dreams for us. Years later, I remember Tiffani being involved in this, too. But I don't think that Donnie, Mark, Danielle or Adam ever were. They really missed out on all the fun. ;)

  5. Goblins and Good Guys. What a hilarious on-going 'fight!' Darron and Monica each vying for creative rights to ownership. Monica is right in that she was the oldest and usually did come up with the majority of the games we played, but that doesn't mean she created all of them. Darron is right that he does remember the details of the rules better than Monica, but he usually remembers most things better than anyone else (except for me). Neither of these things prove creation of this particular game. As an unaffiliated observer, I would like to settle this for the record once and for all. I was there. I witnessed the creation and claim no part of the creation for myself. I officially declare the creation of Goblins and Good Guys a co-creation, team effort of Monica and Darron combined. Good job, guys! I would love to teach it to our kids and watch them play! You guys will have to remind us how it's done at our next reunion.
